What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is the treatment of mental and emotional distress by a trained clinician through the use of specific interventions. The goal of psychotherapy is to create change in thoughts and behaviors in order to increase life satisfaction and personal growth. Depending on the therapist, there can be a wide range of techniques used; however, most involve forming a therapeutic relationship between therapist and client in order to work together to create a more satisfying and healthy life.

What is the difference between a licensed and unlicensed therapist?
Licensed therapists are required by law to meet numerous requirements of education, training and experience. They are accountable to state licensing boards to maintain standards of practice in order to keep their licenses. Unlicensed therapists may or may not have met some of these requirements and there is no accountability board where you can determine their training and/or experience.

Is therapy only for people with serious problems?
Therapy is beneficial in many life situations. While many people seek out a therapist when they are working to overcome past negative experiences or are currently facing overwhelming challenges, therapy is also utilized as a vehicle for self-introspection and personal growth.

What can I expect from our first session?
We will briefly go over the necessary paperwork (unless you have completed this prior to our session) that is legally required to initiate counseling. We will then spend time gathering some information about your history and discussing your individual goals for therapy. I will further explain how I work in counseling and will answer any questions you may have about the work we will do together. I believe it is important to move at each client’s pace and I work hard to provide a non-threatening and respectful space for you to share your thoughts and feelings when you feel ready.

How long can I expect to be in counseling?
It is hard to answer this question without knowing the specifics of what brought you to counseling. Some people come to counseling to sort through feelings they have about a new transition in their life. They may find relief within 3-6 sessions. However, some people initiate counseling to work through more complicated issues such as a past trauma or to work on improving a relationship and may benefit from a longer duration. I will do my best to give you an estimate if I can determine it. We will periodically check in regarding how you feel counseling is benefiting you throughout our work together.

What are your rates? Do you accept insurance? What forms of payment do you accept?
I charge $100/hour and $135.00/90 minutes. It is typically more effective to schedule a 90 minute session for Couples Counseling. I do not accept insurance; however, I am able to create an invoice that you can submit for your HSA (Health Savings Account) if that is helpful. I accept cash, check, or credit card.

How can I be sure that you are the right therapist for me?
I offer a free 15 minute phone or in person consultation that allows us both to see if we might be a good fit. This time is used for you to ask any questions you may have and for me to share with you the way I work. Call today to schedule your free consultation.
